About the artist

Paul O'Kane 'Plein Air' artist.

Lives in near Belfast in Northern Ireland. Retired architect. A few words from Paul.

"I’m a weather watcher. When there is a forecast for a few good days I plan a painting trip. Somewhere in Ireland is fine in my camper-van. Or further afield on my Harley.

I chose a painting medium depending on my mode of transport. I can pack anything in the camper so I normally chose oils. A motorbike trip is great for gouache, which dries rapidly and uses a very compact kit. If I fly somewhere I usually paint in watercolour. Oils on an airplane are a challenge, but do-able.

I only paint en plein air, except when I do demonstrations or give workshops. If the weather is inclement then tutored trips end up in the studio…which is fine. But site work is where the adrenaline kicks in. Exciting stuff.

My plein air style is to paint as quickly as possible. Not that I’m in any rush, but because I have developed a raft of time saving techniques which are designed to complete a painting to a high standard within an hour. My techniques are all bases on simple ideas…Colour, tone, compositing, pre-preparation ie. minimal kit etc.

I spend most of my teaching time explaining to students the need for and ways to simplify. After an hours standing/painting I need a coffee and a sit down. Then it’s back to the battlefield.

I’ve travelled and painted a lot around Europe, but never yet in Granada. This will be a first. Sierra Nevada mountains, medieval architecture. Eeee. I cant wait. But beware, architecture is not easy to paint. So simplify. I’ll show you how…. Choose a focal point. Focus most of your energy there. Keep the remaining 80% out of focus.

It’s easy but takes practice.

Onward into battle."

Travel

We suggest you fly to Malaga, though Granada does have a small airport. Most major airlines fly to Malaga. We will arrange transport to get you to and from the hotel, we will be there to greet you.

Granada's Climate

Painting in Granada in 2017

Granada's climate is friendly and dry, the air clean and healthy, with clear and cheerful skies. In September the temperature averages low to mid 20 degrees, perfect for painting outside.

The Granada region offers Spain's richest variety of climate and landscape, from the alpine vegetation of the Sierra Nevada to the tropical coast of Motril.

Granada's Geography

Granada is situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada between two hills, separated by the Darro Valley, which cast their views over the wide vega. The River Darro flows through the centre of the city, dividing the hills of Sacromonte and Albaycin, that of the Alhambra.

Granada's flora comprises a wonderful botanical mix, with tropical plants growing but a short distance from alpine slopes.

We will be staying in a lovely hotel in the center of the city, a few minutes walk to the centre and close to the Alhambra Palace.
