Phenomenal artists and dedicated tutors, they are both very excited to be leading this 10 day painting course in Uttarakhand in 2018 which welcomes beginners to experienced artists and their friends or partners covering all mediums. Already attracting international attention from guests who want to visit and paint in this stunning location.

Painting in the Himalayas with Painting in Europe

The area we are visiting for this course is set in Nainital, in the foothills of the Himalayas, it is renowned for it’s wildlife including Tigers and Elephants, Monkeys, exotic birds and insects. Filled with Rhododendrons in Spring making a red carpet of colour in the forests. Panoramas abound and there are so many locations to paint it is hard choosing.

We have had to make a change to the date of this course due to climate change. This year, for the first time the Rhododendrons began blooming 4 weeks early. These glorious blossoms that fill the forests with colour will probably continue to bloom earlier next year. For this reason we have brought the dates of the course forward to ensure we do not miss them. It will be the beginning of spring and the weather will certainly be ideal for painting, trekking and anything else we want to do AND we won’t miss these indigenous blooms.

Belinda is celebrated for her beautiful botanical paintings and birds and animals and landscapes. She also runs her own painting workshop weeks in New Zealand, Norfolk Island and Rarotonga, and a week with us in summer in Umbria. During this painting course she will offer one to one teaching and demonstrations. She encourages and motivates artists with their painting and technique, whatever their level. She’s also very good fun and great company. Please check out her information on the tutor section of this website and her page on our sister website www.arteumbria.com/belindabiggs

Kelly, another of our regular popular tutors and well known to guests who have joined us at Arte Umbria and Painting in Europe is now joining us to paint 'Plein Air' landscapes and townscapes in oil and watercolour. Please check out her paintings on http://arteumbria.com/tutors/kellymedford

Where we are staying

Prasada Bhawan hotel in the Himalayas

Built in 1876 the property was called "Abbotsford Lodge" owned by an Englishman, John Hope Simpson, Esquire of the Indian Civil Service in the erstwhile United Province of Agra and Oudh. Bought in 1903 by the Prasada's it was rechristened “Prasada Bhawan". The fourth generation of the family carry on the rich legacy of the past. Interiors are a tasteful mix of high wooden ceilings; tinned roof and pinewood flooring that give the perfect feel of the classic mountain house. Decorating the halls and catching the eye of the visitor are the many fascinating art deco pieces reflecting the exotic, sophisticated taste of it’s owners from different times. Antiquarian items from different ages and different parts of the world adorn the house - Italian marble busts, garden statues, Afghani and Jail carpets, Wedgwood plate hangings, swords, muskets and elephant tusks.

The suites are full of natural light. Antique and contemporary furniture compliments the contrasting textured walls of the rooms. Seasoned pinewood covers the floors, and the rooms have a fabulous view of the peaks and the sounds of chirping birds and rustling trees. All our rooms are individually heated and equipped with cable TV. Bathrooms are decorated with colorful Vietri tiles. All have a shower and are scented with the essence of products of Forest Essentials.

The restaurant Cafe Chica offers organic wholesome delicious food and there are also opportunities to participate in cookery classes.

Nainital

Beautiful scenery and walks around Nainital Lake

Dotted with lakes (Nainital Lake, Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal, Khurpatal, Sattal), Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India'. The most prominent of the lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills.

Nainital's unending expanse of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature. Known for its beneficial climate and breathtaking beauty, the Nainital town is a popular health resort and attracts tourists around the year.

Long walks along the charming forest trails in the neighbouring woods is another added attraction in Nainital and in spring with the beautiful flowers it is just THE perfect time to visit.

Weather for Nainital in Spring

This time of year is a comfortable mid to high 20’s, but can vary due to climate change.

Travel

We recommend that you fly to New Delhi International Airport - Indira Ghandi International airport.

All leading airlines fly to Delhi. We are recommending, instead of flying from Delhi to Pantnagar airport in Nainital that you take the train to Kathgodam.

Trains are wonderful in India and give you an opportunity to see a lot more of this amazing, vast, beautiful country.

We will book your overnight stay at The Bloomrooms Hotel for when you arrive in Delhi, This is a practical, business hotel, not at all expensive. More importantly it is a few steps away from New Delhi train station so you can avoid extra taxis and just walk there in the morning. We will have everyone collected from New Delhi International airport once we know your arrival times and taken to the hotel. We, or a Painting in Europe representative will be staying in The Bloomrooms Hotel the day you arrive and we will guide you to the train station the next day, and help with anything you need.

We will book your First Class train tickets (we recommend First Class as it is not expensive with air conditioning) and email them to you, and you can settle up with us in Rupees when you arrive. You must let us know as soon as possible.

The hotel in Delhi, train and the taxi collections are not included in the cost of the trip. If you would like us to proceed and book the hotel, train and taxis please let us know and we will send you a Paypal link for payment or we are happy to accept your payment in Rupees when we meet with you.

The train to Kathgodam leaves at 6.00am from New Delhi station and arrives at 11.00 am. From there we will arrange to have you collected by taxi and taken to Abbotsford. We will take the train the morning of 7th March which will get us to Abbotsford in time for lunch.

If you do opt for the internal flight to Pantnagar airport, we will arrange collection from there. Air India are the only airline that fly to Pantnagar and occasionally they will change flight schedules or cancel at the last minute, so this is why we are recommending the train adventure!

You will need a tourist VISA to visit India but this is easily done online, please follow this link for all the information you will need and to receive your Visa online.
