Vibrant Watercolours with KELLY MEDFORD
All Aboard for the Marrakesh Express 17 March - 24 March 2018
Please don't miss out on this spectacular week with Kelly!
After our very successful visit in February this year, Kelly is very eager to visit Marrakesh again next year to run her watercolour week again. It is obvious that Marrakesh is much more than just a city. It is a pearl polished by history and has a tradition of hospitality which, for centuries, has known how to welcome visitors.
We will be there to welcome you after you have been collected from the airport by taxi and brought to our delightful Riad where you will be welcomed by a delicious mint tea and pastry. Historic architecture romance, vibrant colour of the city combine with luxury shops, banks, tearooms and cafés; the "red" city reconciles its prestigious past with a contemporary feel. Marrakesh is a city full of life and enthusiasm as its omnipresent dynamism shows.
As a first time visitor you will be charmed by the atmosphere, finds, encounters, strolls, picturesque vistas and souvenirs. Your only regret will be as your time for departure approaches. However, you can then dream of coming back to enjoy the mild moonlit nights on a terrace again and your painting.
At this time of the year the temperature is an ambient 25 degrees during the day on average. This makes it very pleasant for painting and strolling the beautiful sites.
What the course will offer
There will be 6 days of painting and sketching during this 7 night stay and sketching with Kelly around different locations in Marrakesh, a trip to the famous Souks and the opportunity for a camel ride if the fancy takes you *.
There will be lots of demonstrations by Kelly and one-to-one tuition. You are welcome to jump in and out of painting, or you can take advantage of sightseeing and wander around markets and food and drink stalls at your leisure.
During the day we will be exploring, quick-sketching, taking photographs, tea (mint tea is the local speciality) and coffee breaks to sample the local fare. *extra trips at your own expense. Just ask us and we are more than happy to arrange it for you.
Plenty to inspire you
During your stay take a trip through the medina or a stroll to Place Jemaa El Fna. It will be the real start of your journey through time. Your reference points will change as you go back in time. You are no longer interested in the number of kilometres travelled.
The past suddenly appears in the form of storytellers, street performers, snake charmers and magicians dispensing secret potions, medicines and vibrant colours. One of the inscriptions engraved on the Chrob ou Chouf fountain, nearby and close to the Ben Youssef mosque, advises the passer-by to "drink and see what is going to happen”.
Many treasures, especially famous riads, are hidden away in Marrakesh. Riads are houses, built around a central patio, whose outside walls are entirely closed.
Riads are often converted into guesthouses or restaurants and are a symbol of the Moroccan art of fine living and we will be staying in one of these delightful Riads during the painting week and we will make them our base, and they will be for our exclusive use during our stay.
A stroll round the Semmarine souk will convince you of the wide range of Moroccan handicraft skills. Between delicious pastries, very traditional babouches (leather slippers) or djellabas (flowing garments), you are sure to find something to spoil your self or your loved ones.
You must not miss the dyers', blacksmiths' or jewellers' souks: excellence and high quality are always present!
Also worth a visit is the spice market in the mellah (old Jewish neighbourhood). A kaleidoscope of colour and aromas. Stock up on the flavours you will use for delicious treats for your friends all year round! All the shopkeepers will be pleased to explain how to follow Moroccan recipes.
