Venice with Arte Umbria 26 September for 7 days
By popular demand from guests and tutors we are delighted to offer this trip to Venice under the Arte Umbria umbrella.
26 September - 3 October 2017 ARTE UMBRIA’S VENICE IN WATERCOLOUR - with Tim Wilmot
Here is a thrilling addition to our Arte Umbria courses. Tim is a superb artist and tutor and is perfectly suited to teach in this most beautiful of locations. Please have a look at his website
What the course will offer
Painting with Tim around different locations in Venice for 6 days. There will be lots of demonstrations by Tim and one-to-one tuition. It is entirely up to you if you want to jump in and out of painting, or you can take advantage of ‘sightseeing’ at your leisure. We paint away from the busy tourist locations, but everywhere is a painting location in Venice. You are of course welcome to site see as much as you want. This week is perfect if you want to come with a non-painting partner as there is so much for them to see and do in Venice whilst you are out and about painting and they can join you with a big discount. You are spoilt for choice in this romantic, historic city.
All the pleasure, quality tutoring and congenial company you’ve come to expect from Arte Umbria but this time it will be in this beauteous location. Places are limited so early booking is advised.
Included in the price is a collection and return from Marco Polo airport and transportation by water taxi (the best way to arrive in Venice) to our hotel, a Vaporetto (water bus) ticket for the week that will take you everywhere in Venice, and to all the islands as well. For guests travelling from the United Kingdom, the flight we are recommending is with EasyJet to Venice Marco Polo from London Gatwick. Ideally guests should aim to arrive at around 16.30pm to take advantage of the water taxi but for guests arriving at different times we will do our very best to meet you and bring you to the hotel on a Vaporetto.
We are so fortunate to be able to offer a delightful bijou, privately-run, 3 * hotel on the Lido which is exclusively for our use during the week.
The hotel (just a 2 minute walk from the Vaporetto/Taxi stop) is a mere 10 minute trip on a Vaporetto to St. Mark’s Square. Alberto, the owner is looking forward to our return and he and his staff will make sure we have everything we need.
Fantastic breakfast and Alberto’s team make sure we are well looked after. Hotel Villa Delle Palme has a lovely Art Deco feel, a pretty garden where we can enjoy our aperitifs and nibbles after a long day painting or sightseeing, and an observation turret with amazing views over the Lido to St. Mark’s Square with wonderful dawn to dusk panoramas. We think some of you may find that an inspiring vista. Perfect!
Hotel Villa delle Palme is a jewel entirely surrounded by thirty high palm trees. Converted to a hotel in 1950 and carefully renovated in 2002, the hotel still retains some of the original furniture, including precious Murano glass chandeliers and wall lamps.
A very generous buffet breakfast (hot and cold) is served in a room with classic Venetian style furniture in shades of celestial blue and ivory.
All bedrooms have double beds, en-suite facilities and air conditioning, SKY television and mini bar (mini bar at your own cost). Each room has an internet link via ADSL. 3 Superior rooms have balconies which come with a supplement of £50 so early booking is advised if you want one of these.
We have taken over the whole delightful hotel for this week for our exclusive use.
We have chosen to stay on the Lido as after a busy day in the centre of Venice, you can relax and enjoy the convivial Lido atmosphere and amenities.
The centre of Venice goes to bed very early, around 9.30 pm, so staying here ensures we have an evening at a restaurant to enjoy ourselves after our busy days of painting and sightseeing. It is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the Boulevard and some lovely shops and restaurants.
The film Death in Venice was filmed on the Lido. If you do want to visit the centre in the evening for concerts etc, it’s only 10 minutes away and a 2 minute walk from the Vaporetto stop to the hotel.
All Breakfasts at the hotel and and two dinners at a local restaurant are included in the accommodation price. Aperitifs and nibbles at the end of each day in the garden. Lunches are entirely up to you as you may be anywhere in the centre of Venice. We also visit a couple of the local famous islands such as Murano famous for it’s glass making or Burano, the ‘end of the rainbow’ island with it’s multi coloured houses.
Who can forget Visconti’s film Death in Venice with the lovely Mahler music, or Don’t Look Now? Venice is a sumptuous feast, atmospheric and beautiful even in poor weather, full of colour, history, architecture, art, food and culture.
The famous Basilica in St. Mark’s Square, countless churches and palazzi, art exhibitions - it’s a culture vulture’s paradise. We promise not to have any vertically challenged people in red coats!
We have taken over the whole delightful hotel for this week for our exclusive use which ensures a house party atmosphere - a home from home.
For any of the guests we can arrange cookery classes or private tours with our friends in Venice.
Some wonderful comments from Tim's students:
Thank you for the best watercolor demonstration I have ever seen. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed it, learned from it, and will share it with my students (some of whom are very good indeed). I found the chopped-into brush hilarious and will immediately find one I can chop up the same way and try some trees. The things that startled me were the delicacy of some of the calligraphy, the deep values of the shadows (occasionally blotted to achieve luminousity), and the beautiful placement of white highlights. I was also impressed by your leaving alone the trees on the right after you first put them down, and the lack of detail in the tree trunks and minimal indication of branches”
“Awesome demo. Like most, I struggle with too much detail. This will help me to "loosen up". I like how methodical you are and how you capture the light in your paintings. I also find it interesting how your figures are always walking towards the viewer. Seems like lost watercolorists have them walking away from the the viewer. I think your way brings your paintings to life.”
Testimonial from one of our guests on our Venice trip in 2016
''The Venice course was a joy and an eye-opener first to last, thanks to the unstinting efforts of sponsors David and Sara Moody. As a non-painting member of the group, I undertook crossing the pond and spending a week abroad with modest expectations: I wanted simply to "hang" with the watercolorists and their excellent instructor, see a bit of La Serenissima, and write some decent journal entries. Little did I know I was in for one of the great adventures of my life.
The artists in our group made me feel included and helpful, sometimes even asking for feedback on their paintings, while David and Sarah carved time from their busy schedules to take me on impromptu field trips, answer my many questions, and help with daily activities. The combination of a magical setting, comfortable lodgings, excellent meals and nonstop camaraderie proved an intoxicating blend, and even now, months later, I continue to think and write about these eight extraordinary days.
I could not have asked for a more positive travel experience and already am thinking of signing up for another course with the Moodys, my lack of artistic talent notwithstanding. If this seminar can energize a non-painter like me, just think what it could do for someone at home with a brush and paper. Well done, David and Sara! ''
